How to Choose a Faux Fur Dog Blanket for the Sofa: Sizes, Colours and Washing

A tan and black dog wrapped in a Wild Rabbit faux fur dog blanket on a sofa

Written by The Stylish Dog Company.

Last updated 3 October 2026. Sizes, materials and care taken from our own faux fur blanket range, with guidance from PDSA, the RSPCA and Dogs Trust. About an 8 minute read.

For a dog who shares the sofa, a Large faux fur blanket at 94 x 94cm covers a sofa seat, and the 150 x 100cm bed throw gives a dog who stretches out room along a bigger sofa. Then pick the colour for your dog’s coat, not just the room. Ours go in the washing machine on a cool cycle and dry flat or over an airer, never in the tumble dryer.

In brief

  • A Large faux fur blanket (94 x 94cm) covers a sofa seat. The bed throw (150 x 100cm) gives a dog room to stretch out along a bigger sofa, or across the end of a double bed.
  • Choose the colour by your dog’s coat. Two-tone and darker shades hide dark hairs, while Ivory and Sandstone suit pale dogs and light rooms.
  • Wash on a cool cycle, on its own, with no bleach or fabric softener. Don’t wring it, don’t tumble dry it, dry it flat or over an airer, then shake the fur.
  • The RSPCA suggests giving a dog a resting spot in the room where the family spends time, as well as one somewhere quiet. In a lot of homes, that spot is the sofa.
  • Our main faux fur blanket range is made to order in England and usually dispatched within seven days.

Why put a faux fur blanket on the sofa?

Once the clocks go back, plenty of dogs end the day wherever their people are. The RSPCA’s advice on dog beds is to put a bed somewhere warm and draught-free and to give your dog options: one in a quiet part of the house where they can rest undisturbed, and one in a room where the family spends time so they can relax in your company. In a lot of homes that second spot turns out to be the sofa, whether anyone planned it or not.

A blanket gives that habit a proper home. It marks out your dog’s end of the sofa, catches the hair and the odd muddy paw print, and comes off for a wash when the cushions underneath can’t. PDSA’s autumn advice ends by suggesting you get your pet’s warm bed or blanket ready for the cosy evenings ahead.

If the evening starts with a wet walk, towel your dog off before they get on it. Our guide to autumn walks with your dog covers the quick check worth doing when you get in, and a dry dog keeps the blanket cleaner for longer.

What size faux fur blanket do I need for the sofa?

Our main faux fur blanket range comes in four sizes, and the right one depends on where it will live as much as on the size of your dog.

Size Measures Best for
Small 54 x 54cm A puppy, a toy breed or lining a crate
Medium 74 x 74cm Most small to medium dogs, and a standard dog bed
Large 94 x 94cm A bigger dog who curls up, and covering a sofa seat
Bed throw 150 x 100cm Stretching out on a bigger sofa, or across the end of a double bed

Measure the sofa first

Measure the seat your dog actually uses, from the front edge to the back cushion and from side to side. If they curl up in one corner, compare that with the Large at 94cm square. If they stretch out along the sofa, or you’d like enough spare to tuck down behind the seat cushions so it stays put, look at the bed throw, which is 150cm long.

Then measure the dog

A dog who sprawls needs room to stretch out on the blanket, not just a patch to sit on. Measure them from nose to the base of the tail while they lie on their side, the same way our guide to what size dog bed you need explains, and choose the size that gives them that length with room to spare.

Which colour hides dog hair best?

Pick the colour for your dog first and the room second. A blanket that matches the sofa but not the dog will show every hair.

  • Grey, black or brindle coats: Grey Squirrel hides hairs from all three, and Dark Grey Softee hides hairs and paw prints.
  • Brown and black coats: Brown Softee, a rich chocolate brown that also suits darker sofas and traditional rooms.
  • Muddy paws: Wild Rabbit. Its grey and brown mix forgives dog hair and muddy paws between washes better than a plain colour.
  • Pale or cream coats: Ivory or Sandstone, which also suit light rooms. Ivory lifts a dark sofa.
  • Not sure: Taupe Grey, a warm shade halfway between grey and mushroom that goes with almost any room.

How do you wash a faux fur dog blanket?

Every colour in our made-to-order faux fur range has the same care instructions, and they are simple. Give it a good shake first, outside if you can, so loose hair and grit don’t go in the machine. Then:

  1. Machine wash it on a cool cycle, on its own.
  2. Use no bleach and no fabric softener.
  3. Don’t wring it, and don’t tumble dry it.
  4. Shake it out and dry it flat or over an airer.
  5. Once it’s dry, give the fur a shake and it springs back. Run your fingers through any flattened patches.

Keep one on, one in the wash

A blanket your dog uses every evening will need washing often. With two, one stays on the sofa while the other dries flat.

Fleas are a different job from a routine wash. If your dog has them, talk to your vet about treating the whole home, and see our guide to washing a dog bed for flea washing.

Is a faux fur blanket a good idea for an older or chilly dog?

Some dogs feel the cold more than others. PDSA notes that dogs can get very cold as temperatures dip and may need extra blankets, or appreciate the central heating, during cold spells, and Dogs Trust says some shorter-haired breeds and puppies may need more help staying warm, with a coat when it gets chilly outside. Indoors, a deep faux fur blanket gives them something soft to lie on and burrow into on the sofa.

It is a blanket, though, not a treatment.

A note on older dogs. This is general information, not veterinary advice. If your dog seems stiff after resting, struggles to get comfortable, or has stopped settling in their usual spots, speak to your own vet. Our guide to why a dog won’t sleep in their bed lists the signs worth mentioning.

How long does a made-to-order blanket take?

Our main faux fur blanket range is made to order in England, in the colour and size you choose, and sent as soon as each one is finished. Dispatch is usually within seven days, so allow for that on top of delivery, particularly if it’s a present.

Prices start from just over £50 for a Small, and the bed throws sit at the top of the range, between about £150 and £200. The product page for each colour shows the current price for every size.

Key takeaways

  • A Large (94 x 94cm) covers a sofa seat. The bed throw (150 x 100cm) suits a dog who stretches out along a bigger sofa. Measure the seat and your dog before you order.
  • Choose the colour to hide your dog’s hair, not just to match the room.
  • Cool wash on its own, no bleach or softener, no wringing, no tumble dryer. Dry flat, then shake the fur.
  • A blanket is a soft layer, not a treatment. If an older dog seems stiff or uncomfortable, ask your vet.

Frequently asked questions

What size dog blanket do I need for a sofa?

A Large, at 94 x 94cm, covers a sofa seat, which suits a dog who curls up in one place. For a dog who stretches out along the sofa, choose the bed throw at 150 x 100cm. Measure the seat your dog uses before you order.

Can you put a faux fur dog blanket in the washing machine?

Yes. Ours are fully machine washable. Wash on a cool cycle, on its own, with no bleach or fabric softener, then shake it out and dry it flat or over an airer.

Can I tumble dry a faux fur blanket?

No. Don’t tumble dry it or wring it. Dry it flat or over an airer, and give the fur a shake once it’s dry so it springs back.

Why has my faux fur blanket gone flat after washing?

The fur can flatten a little in the wash. Once it’s dry, shake it out and brush the fur with your fingers and it comes back. Keep it out of the tumble dryer.

Which faux fur colour hides dog hair best?

Choose by your dog’s coat. Grey Squirrel and Dark Grey hide hairs from dark and grey coats, Brown suits brown and black coats, and Wild Rabbit’s grey and brown mix hides hair and muddy paws better than a plain colour. For pale dogs, choose Ivory or Sandstone.

Are your faux fur dog blankets made in the UK?

Yes, they are made in England. The main range is made to order and sent as soon as each blanket is finished, and dispatch is usually within seven days.

Is a faux fur blanket good for an older dog?

It gives an older dog a soft, deep layer to lie on, but it isn’t a treatment. If your dog seems stiff, cold or uncomfortable, or has stopped settling in their usual spots, speak to your vet.
